Recast

Kinokino opened a new exhibition about architecture and planning in Sandnes and at Jæren. The area is rapidly changing from a traditional farming area to an oil and technology area, and in the future maybe an innovative farming area? A change from being one of the poorest region to the richest in the country, a change from a backwater town to an international hub, a rapidly growing urban region.

The exhibition consists of two parts: The Oslo School of Architecture and Design (AHO), Instistute of Landscape and Urbanism, has researched and analysed the Jæren area from different angles. Snøhetta Architects have made an analysis of Sandnes town. Documentation from the research and analyses are on display in the exhibition.

I had high expectations for this exhibition. Very interesting topics, very interesting participants, and a great venue. But what I found are mostly fragments and impressions. I expected to see analyses describing the situation and proposals for the future, with plans, drawings and models. The exhibition shows which topics have been researched, but does not show much of the result of the research. What I see is a serie of black/white photos of Sandnes or of models of Sandnes, with no description. I see photos from the research prosesses, with little description. And some graphs of statistical data, that are interesting enough, but does not offer any solutions. The most interesting is the description of the exhibition. This is where the challenges and possibilities are described, here are the questions that trigger the imagination. There is also a very interesting map of a possible future Sandnes, but I would have liked to see more about that plan.

The last exhibition at Kinokino, "Serieglobus", had a good combination of eye-catching displays and substance. The displays showed extracts and fragments of different cartoons. I was drawn in with a wish to see more, and satisfied that the cartoons were all present in a reading lounge in the room. At the "Recast"-exhibition the introduction and displays are promising eye-catchers, but the substance is missing. I believe the exhibition makes most sense to those who know or have participated in the processes.
